The character was born from the pen of the Irish writer Bram Stoker in 1897 and was incredibly successful, so much so that several film versions and more have been made of its story.
But do you know who inspired Stoker to write this horror novel?
That’s right, precisely the figure of Vlad III of Wallachia. Moreover, one of his castles can still be visited in Romania.
Vlad, better known by his name Dracula, was a member of the House of Draculesti and a member of the Order of the Dragon, founded to protect Christianity in Eastern Europe.
Vlad was nicknamed the Impaler because he loved to impale his enemies, hence his reputation as a cruel and bloody man.
In Romania and other parts of Europe, he is considered a folk hero because he protected the Romanian people north and south of the Danube.
