The devil was stuck for a day until he disappeared into one of the two holes in the column, thus creating an opening to the gates of hell.

Even today, if you get close to the holes you might smell the sulfur and you can hear the bubbling of the Styx, the infernal river. Also, if you want to survey the night before Easter Sunday, you might catch a glimpse of the chariot of souls taking the damned to hell, pulled by the Devil himself!

Here you will be taken to May 26, 1435, on Ascension Day where about fifteen conspirators entered San Venanzio, where, the master of the city, Tomasso Chiavelli was attending solemn mass with his family. The Chiavelli family had ruled the city for decades but their subjects were not at all satisfied. Thus, they came to that church to commit the massacre of the lords of the city. If one refers to historiography it would seem that the conspirators failed to kill all the male heirs.
