Recently we have been hearing about literary-themed escape rooms that were born as events with a view to promoting books or as a result of their success. This is the phenomenon of temporary escape rooms. I bring you an all-Italian example, although it is obviously no longer playable; this is to give you an idea of how much the creation of an escape room can be inspired by worlds born from the pens of writers and how much the publishing market can benefit from such a promotion!

In Milan, between March and July 2019, the publishing house Neri Pozza decided to create a temporary escape inspired by the book “The Seven Deaths of Evelyne Hardcastle” by Stuart Turton, which even ended with a video message from the author for Italian readers!

The experience received a lot of appreciation, but more importantly, it brought together two worlds that can feed off each other and can result in extraordinary effects for players/readers!

In Rome, there is an escape room that catapults you directly into the magical world created by Rowling, named “Escape from the Wizarding Prison”. 2. Sherlock Holmes: Of course, in this list of the top literary-themed escape rooms, we could not miss the brilliant detective born from the pen of Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle! On the other hand, in every escape room we all have to be a little Sherlock Holmes: observing, investigating, and deducing. To pay homage to this figure, many escape rooms have sprung up set in Victorian London in which Doyle placed his novels. The companies Trapped and Unlock, for example, have created two rooms to catapult players into an adventure of investigating literature’s greatest detective.
   
3. The Da Vinci Code: Bestseller first and a blockbuster movie later, Dan Brown’s masterpiece is perfect to be the setting for an escape room! So here we find it again as the inspiration for Stanzenigma, in Cagliari, or for Game Over, in Rome.
   
   
   
4. The Chronicles of Ice and Fire: Known to most as the TV series The Iron Throne, R.R. Martin’s saga has also inspired the creation of some amazing literary-themed escape rooms. In particular, it is loosely inspired by Martin’s fantasy novels, with the escape room in Milan entitled “The Winter Fairy Tale,” created by Trap Milan, and another in Turin, where Game Over has recreated the settings of the seven kingdoms.
