The Squid Games of the Netflix K-drama

1. One Two Three Star

Among squid games, the best known even by us is one, two, three, star! How many have played it as children or seen their children play it? For those who are familiar with the series, we certainly know that this squid game is not as innocent as we think! In fact, this version that even children play is causing much discussion in Italy and abroad.

In short, the rules of one, two, three, star are very simple stand still when whoever is in count turns around, if you move you go back to the beginning. Well, in Squid Game, the rules are these basic ones, too bad that the player who gets caught moving by the giant and, let’s face it, creepy doll gets killed.

For your curiosity’s sake, you should know that this mechanical doll has the likeness of Cheol-soo, an innocent little girl who is portrayed in Korean elementary school textbooks. The doll sings a Korean folk song that says, “has bloomed the flower of mugunghwa“.

Moreover, it was not created specifically for K-drama but adorns a carriage museum in a small Korean village.

2. Dalgona – The Cookie Challenge

One of the squid game games that has become a real phenomenon and won everyone over is the cookie challenge. What could it be you may be wondering?

Simple, Seong Gi-hun and the other participants have to be able to cut out a round, flat cookie made of sugar. Of course, the difficulty lies in the fact that they have a needle to cut out a star, a circle or an umbrella and the cookie is very fragile.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed during an interview that the method used by Gi-hun is just what he used as a child. These cookies, called dalgonas, are a very popular street food, especially in the 1960s.

3.  The Tug of War – Juldarigi

Squid games include tug-of-war, in short, the classic game that we also played at sporting events or in school.

You should know that South Korea has a very old tradition of this game which is called juldarigi and is mainly done at village fairs during the celebration of the first full moon of the lunar new year.

During an interview, the actors revealed that of all the squid games this was the most difficult one to shoot. The reason: on the other side of the rope was a machine that would never let them win, and they really pulled with all their might. That’s why the scene looks so realistic.

In addition, the actors had to shoot their own falls in the air with a harness, of course, but at a height of 15 meters, in short, an experience not to be repeated!

4. Ddakji – The Game with Gong Yoo

Among the squid games contestants play at the beginning of the series is Ddakij. This consists of forcefully throwing red and blue-coloured card shapes on the ground, with the aim of flipping them over. Perhaps, you may be thinking of something similar in our world… I remember when I was a child playing with my cousin a similar variation but with caps.

The curiosity of this scene is that actor Gong Yoo, famous in Korea for his grace and kindness, actually slapped his colleagues in the face whenever they lost the game. They repeatedly complained of pain in their cheeks.

5. Squid Game – The Squid Game

squid game games

Among the squid games, this is the one that gives the series its title. In the world’s most-watched K-drama, you notice it at the beginning of the show, played innocently by children. To explain it to those who have never seen the series, we have to start with its shape, which somewhat resembles that of a squid from which it later takes its name. So the squid shape is the perimeter of the playground.

The goal is to reach the home plate by hopping with one leg and especially trying to dodge opponents who will try to knock you down or hold you back.

Of course, I have simplified it to make it clearer and easier to understand but there are other more minute rules behind it as well.

Fun fact: The director said during an interview that he chose this very game as the symbol of the series because it is very competitive and aggressive, plus it perfectly evokes the harshness of contemporary Korean society.

6. The Cook

We know it is not among the squid games, but we are sure you will enjoy it anyway. Here, you will have to identify yourself as a secret agent ready to catch every little clue to nab the “Cook”, a shady individual who plays with other people’s money and especially leaves messages in plain sight, on sites such as Airbnb and YouTube….
